- WHAT The LANdon Bridge IS
- =========================
-
- The LANdon Bridge is a software bridge/repeater/router for Artisoft(R)
- LANtastic(R) networks. It allows users to mix and match supported hardware
- types on their LANtastic(R) network, and allows all network nodes to log
- into all servers and send messges to all nodes, regardless of what kind of
- hardware they are using.
-
- Users of the LANtsatic(R) 2Mbps adapters or the LANtastic(R)/Z network can
- connect to each other or to a 10Mbps network segment, such as Thinnet or
- twisted pair, and not be subject to the usual hardware restrictions of
- such an arrangement. See MANUAL.TXT for more details.
-
- The LANdon Bridge is a product of Limerick Software, Arcata, CA, and
- is NOT a product of Artisoft, Inc. No endorsement of this product has
- been made by Artisoft, Inc.

-
- TIME-RESTRICTED VERSION
- =======================
-
- This version of The LANdon Bridge is intended as a shareware demonstration
- program. It is a fully functional copy of the registered version of The
- LANdon Bridge, with one exception.
-
- After approximately 1 hour of operation, it will execute the SHUTDOWN command
- internally. The SHUTDOWN command is documented in the manual. After the
- initial 1 hour of operation, the RESTART command will not succeed.
- The FLUSH and REMOVE commands will still work, however, so you can cleanly
- remove the demonstration program from memory, even after the 1 hour
- demonstration period has expired.
-
- Note that there will be no warning before the SHUTDOWN command is executed
- internally. Workstations may have to be rebooted, and data may be lost if
- they are actively accessing servers via the bridge when a SHUTDOWN occurs,
- depending on the particular application program's response to the loss of
- connection with the server.

- CHANGES FROM VERSION 1.0
- ========================
-
- The following features have been added:
-
- * The RUN_BURST switch has been added. The valid range
- for this switch is from 2 to 127 ticks. The default
- is 8. This value dictates the longest period the bridge
- will process requests before yielding to the system. It
- only takes effect during periods of heavy network traffic
- across the bridge.
-
- The following problems have been addressed:
-
- * Switch settings causing a DOS out-of-memory condition
- would lock the machine up in version 1.0. Now, the
- error will be reported properly and the program will
- return to DOS.
-
- * If VERBOSE was the only command-line switch invoked,
- and an error ocurred while installing version 1.0,
- erroneous VERBOSE information would be output,
- but the error message would not. Now, the VERBOSE
- output will not occur if there is an error, and the
- error will be reported.
-
- * Installing version 1.0, REMOVE-ing it, and re-installing
- it a second time would cause the addition of erroneous
- names to the NetBIOS name table of each adapter in
- the bridge machine. This will not occur in version 1.0a.
-
- * Version 1.0 would not recognize some Artisoft(R) 2Mbps
- adapters. Version 1.0a now recognizes these adapters.
-
- * Quasi-circular network topologies, such as when a bridge
- machine with three adapters is connected to another
- server on the network on two of those adapters (the
- other server has two adapters in it), would cause
- various problems and lockups. Similar problems would
- arise if there were different machines on different
- bridged network segments using the same machine name.
- Version 1.0a is much better prepared to handle the
- NetBIOS name conflicts which arise under such conditions.
-
- * The ADD_SERVER_NAME switch returned incorrect error
- messages in some situations. Version 1.0a should
- report correctly now.
-
- In addition, the following internal changes have been made:
-
- * A local stack has been provided, rather than relying upon
- the foreground task's stack.
-
- * All NetBIOS POST routines are now queued for execution
- during the timer tick interrupt, rather than at the time
- NetBIOS calls them. While performance may suffer a bit
- as a result, this makes for a much more stable NetBIOS
- environment.
-
- * The code for adding and deleting NetBIOS names has been
- restructured considerably.
-
- * The size of the buffer used when emulating a workstation's
- REDIR has been increased to match that used in LANtastic(R)
- Version 5.0. The new value works for previous versions
- of LANtastic(R), as well.
-
- * The default value for the REQUEST_SIZE switch has been
- changed from 14 to 32, to reflect the change in the
- SERVER.EXE default between LANtastic(R) Version 5.0 and
- LANtastic(R) Version 4.x. The maximum value for this
- switch has also been changed, from 2048 to 32767. While
- Version 5.0 of Artisoft's SERVER.EXE accepts a REQUEST_SIZE
- as large as 65535, Version 1.0a of BRIDGE.EXE can only go
- as high as 32767.
-
-
- CHANGES FROM VERSION 1.0a
- =========================
-
- The following problem has been addressed:
-
- * Due to a bug in the microcode of some 80286 chips, versions
- 1.0 and 1.0a would cause some 286-based machines to lock
- up on occasion. This problem has been resolved in version
- 1.0b.
-
-
- CHANGES FROM VERSION 1.0b
- =========================
-
- The following problem has been addressed:
-
- * There was an incompatibility with version 4.06 of Artisoft's
- AILANBIO NetBIOS driver that caused error messages reading
- "Network node MACHINENAME is not listening." This has
- been resolved in version 1.0c.
-
-
-
- CHANGES FROM VERSION 1.0c
- =========================
-
- The following problem has been addressed:
-
- * There was an incompatibility with version 4.06 of Artisoft's
- AILANBIO NetBIOS driver that caused error messages reading
- "Too many redirections or logins to node MACHINENAME" the
- first time a particular machine attempts to login via the
- bridge machine. This has been resolved in version 1.0d.
-
-
-
- KNOWN PROBLEMS
- ==============
-
- To the best of our ability, all known problems with The LANdon Bridge, version
- 1.0, have been addressed. The following guidelines should be followed to help
- insure a stable network environment:
-
- * When running AILANBIOS.EXE, make sure that each machine
- on a given network segment is using the same values for
- the INITIAL_SEND_SIZE and SIZE switches.
-
- * When running LANBIOS.EXE, LANBIOS2.EXE, or LANBIOS3.exe,
- make sure that each machine on the 2Mbps network segment
- is using the same value for the BUFFERS switch.
-
- * Whatever NetBIOS drivers you are using, make sure that
- there are ample NAMES, NCBS, and SESSIONS allocated
- for each adapter in the bridge machine. A good value to
- use for each is 32.
-
- * When running REDIR.EXE, make sure that each machine on each
- network segment is using the same value for the SIZE switch,
- and that that same value is used for the BRIDGE.EXE
- BUFFER_SIZE switch.
-
- * When running SERVER.EXE, make sure that each server on each
- network segment is using the same value for the
- NETWORK_BUFFER_SIZE switch. If the REDIR.EXE SIZE switch
- value is different from the SERVER.EXE NETWORK_BUFFER_SIZE
- switch value, then you may use the SERVER.EXE
- NETWORK_BUFFER_SIZE switch value for the BRIDGE.EXE
- BUFFER_SIZE value, rather than using the REDIR.EXE SIZE value
- for the BRIDGE.EXE BUFFER_SIZE. This will result in increased
- bridge performance. Note that both REDIR.EXE and BRIDGE.EXE
- require the value be in bytes, and that SERVER.EXE requires
- the value be in kilobytes. Be sure to make the appropriate
- translation.
-
- * When running SERVER.EXE, also make sure that each server on
- each network segment is using the same value for the
- REQUEST_SIZE switch, and that that same value is used for
- the BRIDGE.EXE REQUEST_SIZE switch.
-
- * If you experience system lock-ups of the bridge machine, try
- using switch values to increase the size of the bridge's heap.
- A good way to do this is to increase the number of LOGINS on
- the BRIDGE.EXE command line.
-
- * If you experience problems with the nodes accesing servers via
- the bridge, then try increasing the number of TASKS on the
- BRIDGE.EXE command line.
-
-
- TO REPORT BUGS OR OTHER PROBLEMS
- ================================
-
- You can send bug reports to us at the address given below, or you can contact
- the author of The LANdon Bridge, Jim Welsh, via CompuServe(R) at 71302,2423.
- Please be as detailed and as patient as possible. We will respond to all bug
- reports as soon as possible. While we will try to respond individually
- to bug reports, if the volume regarding a particular class of problem dictates,
- we may respond by form letter or equivalent.
-
- When reporting bugs, please provide as much information as possible about
- the network activity leading up to the problem. Please include printouts
- of your CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT and STARTNET.BAT files, or their equivalents
- for your system.
-
- Also, describe or illustrate your network topology. The more information
- we have about your network environment, the easier it is for us to solve
- your problem.
-
- Please indicate whether the bridge machine is having the problem or if it is
- the nodes accessing the bridge, or the servers being accessed, and whether it
- is affecting other nodes on the network. Indicate which versions of the
- various network programs are being used, since this infomation is not
- necessarily available from STARTNET.BAT alone. If you use the @switchfile
- option with network programs, please include printouts of the switchfile as
- well. STARTNET.BAT printouts from a typical workstation from each network
- segment would be helpful, as well.
